Coaching & services for better health through middle-age and beyond.

Aging is a privilege. Sometimes it can feel really hard to age gracefully. At The Wellness Flame, we provide coaching and services that are proven to promote your longevity and vitality.

  • The problem is that the reality of declining health looms over all of us as we age, which can make us feel vulnerable and uncertain.

  • Maybe we have new aches and pains, or a diagnosis we are not happy with. Maybe we know someone our age that is dealing with a serious health issue and it has us thinking about our own health.

  • Add to that, the frustration of knowing that our needs are not being met by 15-minute healthcare appointments.

You have worked hard to get to this stage of life. You should be enjoying it.

I understand because I have experienced health threats, too. Like you, I am determined to stack the deck in my favor for a long and robust life. This is why I’ve helped hundreds of people improve their health.

Professional Experience and Clinical Skills

Renae is Board Certified by the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation as both a Holistic Registered Nurse and a Health and Wellness Nurse-Coach.  In 2020, she successfully completed the University of Connecticut’s (UCONN) Holistic Nursing online Graduate Certificate Program and in 2022, the Graduate Nurse-Coach Program at the Integrative Nurse Coach Academy.

Renae also completed her undergraduate studies at UCONN, where she earned two Bachelors’ degrees in Exercise Physiology (1989) and Nursing (1995). After passing the nurse-licensing exam, Renae built the foundation of her career by providing primary nursing care to patients who were experiencing life-threatening cardiac problems in the cardiology unit at Yale New Haven Hospital. Later, she was recruited to be the only full-time Registered Nurse for the out-patient program at Temple Cardiac Rehabilitation in New Haven, CT. These experiences in Cardiology Nursing and Cardiac Rehab helped Renae to develop strong skills in holistic lifestyle assessment, risk factor identification and facilitation of healthy behavior change.

The Medical Director at Temple Cardiac Rehab invited Renae to collaborate in and publish original research for the Yale School of Medicine. This opportunity fueled Renae’s love for public speaking, as she presented two studies at national conferences of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

For nearly eight years, Renae worked in Community Health with the Narragansett Prevention Partnership providing drug and alcohol prevention programs, stress management strategies, and coping skills to students, teachers, and parents. She worked closely with community leaders to develop and implement tailored prevention strategies to meet the needs of her community.

Early in the pandemic, Renae completed the requirements to become a “HeartMath Certified Practitioner” and developed a professional development training addressing personal stress management and health promotion strategies. She delivered this training to all teachers and staff in her local school district to help them manage the new and extraordinary demands of the COVID pandemic. Since then, she has presented this HeartMath professional development workshop at several state-wide conferences in Rhode Island.

Renae recently completed the American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s “Food as Medicine” and the American College of Sports Medicine’s “Exercise as Medicine” courses. A dedicated lifelong learner, she continuously seeks opportunities for ongoing education and professional development.

“I have always loved helping people live healthfully and have expressed that passion throughout my nursing career.”

Renae’s Perspective.

When I worked at Yale New Haven Hospital, I cared for patients who were experiencing heart attacks, life-threatening heart rhythms, heart failure, angioplasties, or preparing for bypass surgery. In addition to their fear, I witnessed how unhappy they were to be spending their time in the hospital.

In cardiac rehab, I enjoyed helping my patients transform their health by transitioning to healthy lifestyle habits. Their improved health outcomes were proven by clinical research conducted by the Yale School of Medicine.

Why wait until after you have a health crisis?

On a personal note, I am a wife, mother of 2, a nurse and business owner. I am living what it means to be busy…to have many demands on my time and to have the urge to always put others’ needs first. I also know what it feels like to be frustrated, overwhelmed and crabby.

In the Holistic Nursing program and the Health and Wellness Nurse-Coaching program, I learned that I have a personal and professional responsibility to engage in daily self-care.

I learned how much better I feel with small, but consistent habits to fulfill my needs. I am happier, healthier, more energized, and more pleasant to be around.

I’m still a work in progress on a lot of fronts…

I have a polarized genetic history. My father is in his mid 80’s, lives independently, walks and swims everyday. On the other side, my mother passed at the age of 66 from a heart attack.

As I move through middle age and approach the “beyond,” I reflect often on my family history and long-held personal health habits. I am highly motivated to stack the deck in my favor for a robust and invigorated next stage of life.

I want to help you do the same.

“If I had to say there is one thing that has really shaped how Renae lives her life it is her desire to help others – as a nurse, as an educator, as a community member and as a friend.”
